STRING WORKS

‘Through The Looking Glass’ 90 x 90 cm nylbond thread and panel

‘Brianna’ 90 x 90 cm nylbond thread and panel

‘Tiger’ 90 x 90 cm nylbond thread and panel

‘Statue’ 90 x 90 cm nylbond thread and panel

These string works are black thread hand woven on a circular frame. Depending on the light, the wall on which they hang and the distance from the viewer the works will change their appearance dramatically as the threads and spaces interact with the light, environment and the viewers perception.

Visual artists manipulate elements of the physical world to express an idea or emotion. Often what we create is an attempt to fool the eye into seeing something that is not really there. A figurative painting is a manipulation of pigments to create an illusion. My interest lies in the spaces between reality, illusion and perception. The line between reality and illusion is a continuum - and that continuum is our perception. Our perception of an empty space between thread can be of a wall in shadows or the highlight of a human eye.

Our perception of the world around us is primitive. We live in a minutely narrow spectrum; on one side reality stretches deep into the Quantum where everything is made of empty atoms. On the other side, out into the astronomical where distances are beyond comprehension and time and space meld together.

Reality, illusion and perception.

RODNEY JAMES ALEXANDER C.V. & LETTERS OF SUPPORT

Reference Letter for Rodney Alexander-Artist

11th September 2024

To Arts Tasmania,

I have had the privilege of working alongside Rodney Alexander for many years across various creative disciplines. As a long-time music collaborator and as co-founders of NosMos Art and Design. I have witnessed Rodney's dedication, talent and versatility first-hand, both in his career as a musician and as a visual artist.

Rodney's qualifications are extensive and reflect his commitment to ongoing learning and mastery of his craft. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Newcastle, a Diploma in Graphic Design, and advanced certifications in contemporary music theory from the Conservatorium of Music, UTAS.

As a musician, Rodney’s accomplishments are impressive. His work as a performer has taken him to prestigious venues such as MONA, Theatre Royal Hobart, and festivals like the Illawarra Folk Festival and Cygnet Folk Festival. He has also co-founded ARPA Records, where he served as a sound engineer, musician, and studio manager, contributing to albums that have collectively sold over 30,000 copies.

Rodney’s success extends into the visual arts, where he is a represented artist at Colville Gallery and previously represented by Huon Art and Gallery Salamanca. His exhibitions have garnered attention, including his 2017 solo exhibition *Zephyr the West Wind* at Side-Space Gallery, opened by the Hon. Sue Hickey. His artistic residencies at Hobart Airport allowed him to engage with the public while creating large-scale works that reflect the Tasmanian landscape, including *Mt Wellington/kunanyi* and *White Lady.*

Rodney's ability to manage multiple creative outlets is remarkable. As a small business owner of NosMos, he demonstrated exceptional design and entrepreneurial skills, co-creating unique art/design products. His graphic design work for the Alannah and Madeline Foundation further highlights his commitment to using his skills for meaningful causes.

In addition to his impressive professional accomplishments, Rodney is a thoughtful, hard-working individual with a passion for both art and music. His dedication to excellence, coupled with his ability to balance multiple creative ventures, makes him a valuable asset to any project.

I highly recommend Rodney Alexander for any opportunity that allows him to showcase his many talents.

Sincerely,

Hiedi Limebeer - MONA
